About the Speaker: Duane Schafer, DDS, MS

Dr. Duane R. Schafer completed a 30-year career in the United States Navy before joining the faculty of the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry. He earned his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from The Ohio State University and completed postgraduate training in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology at the Naval Postgraduate Dental School (NPDS) in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Schafer is a Fellow of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and currently is serving as a Director for the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology.
Dr. Schafer’s involvement in the forensic sciences dates back nearly thirty years and pinnacled as he took over as the Specialty Leader to the U.S. Navy’s Surgeon General for Forensic Odontology shortly after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks of the Pentagon involving American Airlines flight 77. He has worked in support of many high-profile mass fatality missions to include the Dubrovnik, Croatia air crash of Commerce Secretary Ronald H. Brown, the Dhahran, Saudi Arabia barracks terrorist bombing, the mass shooting at Fort Hood military base, and the ultimate identification of Captain Michael Scott Speicher, USN eighteen years after being classified as Missing In Action/Duty Status Whereabouts Unknown. In addition, Dr. Schafer acted as a team leader for the forensic missions at the Charles C. Carson Port Mortuary in Dover, Delaware during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom where his team provided positive forensic dental identification for over 3,000 United States military members who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
Course Description:
The focus of this course is exposing oral healthcare providers with no or minimal forensic experience to mass disaster management and the dental identification process. The course is designed for 2 hours of lecture.
The primary focus of this course is forensic odontology/dentistry.
Course Objectives: At the completion of the course, participants should:
· Recognize the history and role of forensic dentistry in military and civilian settings.
· Recognize the role of forensic dentistry as it relates to forensic pathology, the medical examiner’s office, and crime scene investigation.
· Recognize the difference between circumstantial and scientific forms of identification.
· Understand the value of quality antemortem and postmortem radiographic evidence in making positive dental identifications.
